Type: Comfrey root.
Process: dry Organic Comfrey root.
Other names: Slippery root, wild boneset, bruisewort, and radix consolidate.
Origin: N. Europe
Comfrey, also called slippery root, wild boneset, bruisewort, and radix consolidate is a flowering perennial original to Eurasia and now distributed throughout temperate zones in North America. Comfrey has been used to treat respiratory problems of pleurisy and bronchial inflammation. It was also once used to treat digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and stomach ulcers. For thousands of years, it has also been used to promote the healing of injuries.
Although comfrey was used to produce teas and infusions for hundreds of years, the presence of more than half a dozen pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the leaf and root poses a risk of liver toxicity to animals and people. The root, in fact, contains up to 16 times more pyrrolizidine alkaloids than the leaf.
The traditional use of comfrey in topical formulations, however, is supported by various tannins, rosmarinic acid, and most notably, a compound called allantoin. The latter is used in the manufacture of toothpaste, shampoo, sunscreen lotions, and other cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
Folklore: The root was once carried to ensure protection from mishaps for those away from home. Comfrey root is known as the "guardian of travelers."
Common Names: Slippery root, knitbone, blackwort, bruisewort, and healing herb.
WARNING: Do not use Comfrey root internally. Not to be used during pregnancy. Not to be used while nursing. Do not apply to broken or abraded skin. NOT FOR CULINARY USE.
